Michael Jackson Show

Michael Jackson - ONE by Cirque du Soleil

Cirque du Soleil and the Michael Jackson Estate's tribute to the King of Pop is a visually super-charged journey through inspiration and self-discovery. The plot -- four friends' good-versus-evil quest for solidarity and self-belief -- is a backdrop for weighty motifs that touch on civil rights, sexuality and loneliness en route to a message about world unity.

Each of four main characters receive an object from Michael -- the show's narrator and spirit guide -- and develop as individuals as they take on their mentor's qualities. First, Clumsy is given Michael's shoes, and with his newfound balance, performs a double slackline act to "Bad." Next, Shy overcomes her name when she receives Michael’s glasses, and she vanquishes a troupe of warriors in a martial arts display set to "2000 Watts" and "Jam." Then, Smarty Pants, the de facto leader of the four, puts on Michael's hat and is imbued with the artist's legendary gracefulness in "Smile." Finally, Sneaky, the troublemaker, performs a playful manipulation act with the rogue glove to "This Place Hotel" and "Working Day & Night."

The objects become talismans that lead the four to understand that they were brought together by their love of Michael and are meant to carry on his vision of joy, peace and kindness.

ONE is appropriately dance-driven. A phantom-like character who doesn’t exactly represent Michael but does embody his spirit moves fluidly around the stage, displaying the artist's signature grace and flair.

Most of cast moves with sharper edges, in an urban-inspired dance style that emphasizes quick shifts between fast and slow. The style is achieved most impressively in a dance and tumbling act set to "Smooth Criminal." Mephisto's elite force of villains, dressed in flaring trench coats, bound and flip across the stage in unison. In the air, they appear to move slower than natural, but once they hit the floor, they spring into double-time.

In a singularly beautiful scene played out to "Planet Earth" and "Earth Song," dancers move behind a translucent veil to cast interacting shadows. The artists manipulate the sizes of their shadows by placing themselves at varying distances behind the veil, and they play with illusion as they bend their forms to create images of plants and animals.

ONE portrays Jackson as spirited, hopeful and, above all, magical. After the heroes are united by their love for him, Michael's spirit descends onto the stage and dances in dazzling illusions, in a miraculous moment set to "Man in the Mirror."

The heroes are challenged throughout the production by Mephisto – an antagonist made of radios, microphones, tungsten bulbs, televisions, cameras and surveillance equipment. The image bitterly pokes fun at the paparazzi and media muckrakers that plagued Jackson throughout his life.

But light and darkness become ONE at the close of the show, and the audience is left with a final message from Michael: "We're putting love back into the world. To remind the world that love is important. To love each other. We are one."

KÀ Cirque du Soleil Show

KÀ Cirque du Soleil

KÀ at MGM Grand is an action-packed adventure story about Imperial Twins who are separated by an attack on their Far Eastern palace. Unlike other Cirque du Soleil shows in Vegas, this one has a distinguishable plot. The story is exciting, but what really captivates audiences is how it's told.

Apart from a brief narrative at the beginning of the show, there is no talking in KÀ. Instead, the plot is conveyed through the performers' actions and an awe-inspiring stage that cost $200 million and took two years to build. In KÀ you see special effects from the silver screen come to life before your eyes. In addition, the show's talented cast includes: gymnasts, martial artists, aerialists, a baton twirler and a specialty act that performers a daring routine on a giant spinning wheel contraption.

Just walking into the theater is an experience on its own. As soon as you enter, you are confronted with a postindustrial looking post and beam structure that lines both sides of the theater. Tribal warriors are perched on the structure. Don't be surprised if they suddenly jump out over the audience. The warriors are wearing equipment, allowing them to swing over the audience and back in a matter of seconds.

The surrounding stage elements make you feel like you are a part of the set with the action taking place all around you. Throughout the show, the performers enter the stage from the audience. If you are sitting by the aisle you might even see a warrior appear at your side with a bow and arrow in hand, ready for combat.
Instead of a traditional stage, the audience sits facing a seemingly bottomless void filled with smoke. The artists enter and exit from above, around and inside the void. They do almost everything, but walk from stage left to stage right like what you would see in any typical production. At KÀ the artists fly through the air or perform on two moving platforms that operate independently of each other and five stage lifts. The artists also perform on the post and beam structure that extends from the stage area over the audience.

The ever-evolving performance space transforms into a floating barge, a beach, a snowy mountain and a violent sea in the midst of a storm, among other varied landscapes. The changing platforms mean that the performers and their orientation to the audience is always changing too.

The show starts with a twin brother and sister at a celebration before their palace is attacked by evil warriors. While trying to escape, the twins get separated, and they are each forced to embark on an arduous journey to find one another and reclaim their palace.

They travel through varied terrain and meet interesting characters who help them along the way. KÀ has all of the expected elaborate production elements of a Cirque du Soleil show, including acrobatics. In one scene, the sister lands in a tropical jungle where the inhabitants jump, flip and fly from swinging vines.
While the twins are finding their way, the stage once again transforms into the lair of the evil ruler and his warriors. It is amazing to see the scene instantly change
from a beautiful lush forest to a dark, ominous looking hideout.

Ultimately, the Imperial twins prevail, and the show ends in a glorious celebration with music, dancing and fireworks. If you've ever dreamed of embarking on a fantastical adventure, then make sure to see KÀ on your next stay in Las Vegas.

Venetian Hotel

Venetian

The Venetian
The spirit of Italy is alive in The Venetian resort, complete with frescos, plenty of pasta, canals, gondolas and strolling performers. The hotel offers spacious, beautifully appointed suites, an impressive upscale shopping center, a wide variety of gourmet restaurants and cafés, several attractions and more.

The breathtaking megaresort combines the latest technology and the venerable art and culture of the European jewel: Venice. The Venetian's take on this world-renowned city is a must-see. Coming to this resort is the next best thing to visiting Venice itself. Plus, The Venetian is an eco-friendly property with an impressive array of green initiatives in place -- like LED lighting, solar panels, a reclaimed water system, eco-safe cleaning products, low-flush toilets and much more.

As you enter the lobby, don't be surprised by the visitors taking pictures of the ceiling as if they were in the Sistine Chapel: A detailed, exquisite fresco covers the arched ceiling leading from the registration desk to the casino, promising great things.

The accommodations at The Venetian are aesthetically stunning as well as technologically advanced, with refinements from Italian marble in the bathrooms to 32-inch flat-screen HDTVs, wireless internet access and minibars. At the Venezia Tower, the resort's luxury tower designed to impart an even higher sense of refinement, the suites start at 700 square feet and boast 9.5-foot-high ceilings, 130-square-foot bathrooms, three telephones, multiple flat-screen TVs and Roman tubs with separate glass-enclosed showers, among other things.

Take a ride along a canal in the popular gondolas that run outdoors and through The Grand Canal Shoppes. This impressive Italian street-themed retail complex features an abundance of exclusive stores, priceless art and even performers, sure to please the avid shopper. Authentic cobblestone covers the shopping mecca.

After shopping, there's more fun to be had at the internationally beloved Madame Tussauds Las Vegas wax museum.

Treat your taste buds at any of the numerous acclaimed fine dining restaurants that The Venetian has to offer, which include the creations of culinary giants Thomas Keller (of Bouchon and Bouchon Bakery), Joachim Splichal (of Pinot Brasserie), Wolfgang Puck (of Postrio Bar & Grill) and Tom Moloney (of AquaKnox). Enjoy gourmet pub fare paired with artisanal brews in the Public House, or sink your teeth into a succulent cut of meat at Delmonico Steakhouse. Traditional and contemporary takes on Italian cuisine abound in Canaletto, B&B Ristorante and Zeffirino. Plus, there's an extensive menu of international favorites and 20 fine desserts at the Grand Lux Café.

Buddy V's, a new restaurant by "Cake Boss" star and internationally renowned baker Buddy Valastro, will be opening in fall 2013. It will feature an Italian-American menu and is inspired by Valastro's family gatherings and the beloved recipes passed down by his mother, grandmother and aunts. Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich's restaurant B&B Burger & Beer will also open in fall 2013. The menu will feature local ingredients and the beer-driven beverages that are sourced from Las Vegas and Southern California craft breweries. Chef Daniel Boulud will debut DBGB Kitchen & Bar, a concept where a French brasserie meets an American tavern, in late 2013.

If you want to pamper your body as lovingly as your palate, the Canyon Ranch SpaClub should not be missed. It's the largest spa in town with more than 120 different services and activities including massages, beauty treatments, fitness classes, wellness training and more.

In addition, The Venetian is home to comedians like David Spade. The Broadway musical "Rock of Ages" in the Sands Theatre celebrates the '80s. The hotel is also home to "Smokey Robinson Presents Human Nature: The Motown Show."

There is also no shortage of nightlife thanks to the celebrity-studded Tao nightclub and other smaller yet ultra chic venues such as the V Bar and Oculus. The Bellini Bar serves up specially crafted Bellinis and a long list of beers, wines and cocktails nightly. Signature bourbon cocktails and high-energy '80s dance music are showcased in The Bourbon Room. The Rockhouse, a dive bar designed like an adult playground with tire swings, birdcages, billiards, beer pong tables and a mechanical bull, is open in The Grand Canal Shoppes.

With pools that resemble the fountains of Italian palazzos and amenities that will leave you exclaiming "Bellissimo!" Venice's twin sister city has come afloat at The Venetian. Ah, la dolce vita!

Vegas First-Timers

Vegas First-Timers

So you've never been to Vegas. What's kept you? Never mind - no use wasting any more time trying to explain. The important thing is that you're ready for the time of your life, and there's no better place to celebrate than here. First up - people watching. It may sound mundane, but with the cross-section of visitors and celebrities who come to Vegas, it's usually primetime entertainment. And there's no better spot to partake than Mon Ami Gabi at Paris Las Vegas, a French bistro right on the Strip with the bonus of being directly across the street from the famous Bellagio fountains. Another great spot to grab a bite and observe your surroundings is PBR Rock Bar & Grill at Planet Hollywood, where you can scan CityCenter, the Bellagio and the Strip all at once.

Cruising the Strip is required for any first-timer, by car or by foot, and since we're on the Strip, now's a good time to start. As you cruise, check out the signs for the Cirque du Soleil shows. There are seven permanent shows on the Strip, including the heralded "O" at Bellagio and at MGM Grand, and the people back home will expect you to see at least one of them.

There's so much to do in Vegas besides gaming, but if this is your first time in town, you almost have to play a little. Many hotels offer free lessons for novices - the Golden Nugget among them.

Hungry yet? Las Vegas used to be famous for buffets. Nowadays, you can also enjoy the culinary creations of any number of celebrity chefs; but as a first-timer, a buffet is in order. The Buffet at the Bellagio will satisfy your palate with international selections, while Cravings Buffet at the Mirage offers 11 live cooking stations. Also, don't miss one of Las Vegas' premier dining destinations, and one of New York City's most historic restaurants, the Old Homestead Steak House in Caesars Palace. But don't eat too much! Part of any first trip to Vegas should include staying out all night and eating breakfast before you head back to the room.

Looking for adventure? We've got you covered; whether you like thrills by air, land or sea. Start with the SkyJump at the Stratosphere. At 108 stories, it's the longest controlled free fall of its kind. Soon, you'll be able to experience Slotzilla - a spectacular high-flyin' attraction where you get hooked to a harness and zip line right over the crowds on Fremont Street and under the giant video canopy. Not daring enough? How about swimming with the sharks at the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay?

Speaking of the room, a first-timer should consider staying at Caesars Palace. Evel Knievel. Muhammad Ali. Rain Man. This is the birthplace of many a Las Vegas legend. Who knows? It could be the birthplace of yours.
